A Land Between the Earth
& The sky
Ladakh is located in the Trans-Himalayan region of India bordering Pakistan
and China and physically not far from Afghanistan and Russia. When you look
at the map of India Ladakh is visible as the head of India. Infect Ladakh is
the biggest district of India area wise. Ladakh at present assessable by road
from Manali & Srinagar and by direct flights from Delhi, Srinagar, Chandigarh
and Jammu.
Birth of the moon land
Somewhere 40 million years ago when the tectonic plate of the Indian sub-continent
collided with the continent of Eurasia, the 1,500 miles long Greater Himalaya
was formed with an average height of 4600 M. According to the geologists Ladakh
was the point of collision. Ladakh with the area of 95,000 square kilometers
has one of the lowest population densities in the world; 2 inhabitation per
kilometer.
Where adventurers are moonstruck
Writers, anthropologist and adventure lovers have referred Ladakh as the The
Moon Land or the Broken Moon Land. Perhaps reason being; the geographical features
of the land with inhospitable mountains, the 95,000 square kilometers of rocky
desert and the world of bewitching silence.
Ladakh has some of the most beautiful high altitude land-locked Lakes. The high
altitude lakes and marshes provide an ideal breeding ground for hundreds of
species of migratory birds. The summer winged visitors migrate from the plains
of Indian sub-continent while the winter visitors to Ladakh arrive from Central
Asia and northern Tibetan Plateau.
The Karakoram ranges to the North and the Himalayas to the South; Ladakh itself
at the altitude from 2,750 to 7,672 M is the ultimate paradise for the daring
adventurers.
Journey through the silk route
Leh is the capital of Ladakh and the pivotal of all the tours. The palace on
the hilltop dominates Leh. Once it was the trading center for salt, spice, silk,
carpets, dyestuffs and narcotics from Yarkand, Kashgar, China and other parts
of the Central Asia connecting to the famous silk route. There are still double
hump camels (Bacterian) in the Nubra Valley, which were in the past used as
the carrier.
Ladakh is also know as the Cold Dessert with almost no rain, and camels were
the best suited transportation as they wont require water for weeks and months.
Ladakh has no camels in its land but all the camels that we see today in the
Valley of Nubra are from their ancestors who traversed the central Asia region
during the silk route trade.
The little Tibet
Ladakh is also known as the land of Lamas. People practice the Tibetan Buddhism.
The beautiful monasteries on the hilltops are very much like that of Tibet.
The Thiksey monastery much resembles to the Potola of Tibet in its posture and
grandeur. On the heritage front Ladakh outshines any area as far as ancient
monasteries are concerned; Ladakh has 34 ancients monasteries some dates back
to more then thousands years. Monasteries of Ladakh are rich with antique statues,
Thangka paintings, ancient Buddhist scriptures, wall paintings, coins, armor,
weapons, precious jades and porcelain. The resonant chants of Lamas, the mysterious
tantric rites and the mask dance of Lamas will take you to the world of spirits
and spiritualism.
