Tibetan Herbal Medicinal Tour

"Amchi" the medicine man of the Himalayas were the only local doctors available during the ancient times. With the advent of modern medicines the tradition of "Amchi" almost extinct. But findings of the new scientific researches; of the value of herbs has again conceived the tradition of Tibetan herbal medicine.

This tour evolves around the remote Sapi valley, west of Ladakh in Kargil district. Up to the present day the valley is only accessible by foot and rarely visited by tourists. The unique high altitude flora is still preserved without any disturbance. During the excursion we will see some of the most interesting and widely used Tibetan medicinal plants. Our Amchi will first give us an introduction to the fundamentals of Tibetan medicine. After the introduction and your understanding of the fundamentals he will show and explain us the use, effect, preparation as well as methods of collection and preservation of these plants.

The return journey from Leh through the Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh and Himachal is a unique four wheel drive safari. We visit the famous Tibetan Medicine Institute at Dharamsala on the way and if available a private audience with the H.H. Dalai Lama.

Duration : 26 Nights / 27 Days

Day 01: Arrive I.G. International Airport, met by representative and transfer to hotel. Overnight hotel at New Delhi.

Day 02: Full day sightseeing of Old and New Delhi historic monuments. Night transfer to Domestic Palam airport to board flight to Leh at 5:40 am. Overnight hotel at New Delhi.

Day 03: Arrive Leh, met by our representative and transfer to hotel. Welcome drink at the hotel. Day rest to acclimatize. Evening walk to Leh bazaar at a slow pace. (Do not run or exert) Overnight Hotel at Leh.

Day 04: Full day sightseeing of the Shey, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries. Overnight hotel at Leh.

Day 05: Drive from Leh to Nurla village, enroute visit Alchi and Liker monasteries. (85 Kms/ 4-5 hrs). Overnight camp at Nurla.

Day 06: Trek to Tar village. (3 hrs) Briefing and introduction into fundamentals of Tibetan medicine.

Day 07: A short Excursion from Tar village to with picnic lunch. Post lunch walk in the village and visit the Temisgam monastery. Overnight at camp at Nurla.

Day 08: Drive from Nurla to Nurla to Bodh Kharbu across Foto-la pass, 3450 m (5 Hrs.). Hot lunch at the camp at Bodh Kharbu. Post lunch collect around Bodh Kharbu. Overnight at the camp.

Day 09: Excursion from Bodh Kharbu to village of Sarzing (6Hrs.). Overnight at the camp.

Day 10: Trek to Urgyen Dzong, a meditation cave of Guru Rinpoche.
3-4 Hrs climbing up through a narrow gorge. Overnight camp at Sarzing.

Day 11: Trek from Sarzing to Phokar (3- 4 Hrs.). Visit Phokar monastery. Overnight at the camp.

Day 12: Walk to Sapi village over the high pass of Sapi-la, 4500 m, (6 Hrs.)
Overnight Camp at Sapi village (4000 m)

Day 13: Recognizing and collecting plant at Sapi for the day. Overnight at Sapi village.

Day 14: Trek From Sapi village to Sapi Spong Lungs (5- 6 Hrs.), (4020 m). Overnight camp.

Day 15: Full day collect plants around Rusi-la pass (4800 m). Overnight at camp.

Day 16: Full day excursion to lake Sapi (4500 m). Collect plants on the way. Overnight at camp.

Day 17: Trek to Drag Kar monastery (6 Hrs.). Collect plants on the way.

Day 18: Today our Amchi will treat the villagers nearby the monastery.
We will be able to participate and watch diagnosis and treatment. Overnight at the camp.

Day 19: Trek from Drak-kar to the Choskor, a beautiful petit village (4- 5 Hrs.). Overnight camp at the village.

Day 20: Trek from Choskor to Kannor village. (4- 5 Hrs.). Overnight camp at the village.

Day 21: Drive back to Leh, enroute visit the famous Lamayuru monastery. Overnight hotel at Leh.

Day 22: Morning visit the Oracle of Sabu famous for her healing and fortune telling art. Day at leisure for own activities. Overnight hotel at Leh.

Day 23: Drive from Leh to Sarchu over the high pass of Taglangla (5325 M). Overnight Rashpian Adventure Camp.

Day 24: Drive from Sarchu to Manali over the Rohtang pass (4060 M). Overnight at Holiday Inn Manali.

Day 25: Driver from Manali to Dharamsala. Overnight Hotel Surya Resort at Dharamsala.

Day 26: Full day visit to Tibetan Medicine Institute and other interest. Overnight hotel Surya Resort at Dharamsala.

Day 27: Driver from Dharamsala to Delhi. Evening transfer to International Airport to fly Home.
