Zanskar
Trekking Tours
Duration: 23 Days
Trekking days: 14
Best time: January-February
Grade: 5
Day 01: Arrive Delhi IGI Airport. Met by our representative at Delhi
Airport and transferred to the Hotel. In case your flight arrives in the day
time, in the evening you may like to go for the "Sound and Light Show"
at the Red Fort.
Day 02: Fly Delhi - Leh. Arr. by Air, transfer to htl. Day complete rest
to acclimatize.
Evening walk to Leh bazaar. Overnight at Leh.
Day 03: Morning sightseeing of Leh. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight at
Leh.
Day 04: DRIVE FROM LEH TO SUMDAH DO: To begin with, the road follows
the Indus River for an hour to the confluence with the Zanskar River, the road
then follows this to the village of Sumdah-Do, and we then trek for roughly
an hour on and off the frozen river to the village of Chilling. Camp.
Day 05: TREK UP THE FROZEN RIVER. For the next 5 days we trek up the
Frozen River through gorges and deep valleys. There are a number of choices
for campsites, and therefore we can make our itinerary during this time as flexible
as we like. We have to camp on many occasions in caves beside the river. The
names of the stopping places are listed below. Trek Chilling to Dakmar Bawo
(Cave).
Day 06: TREK DAKMAR BAWO TO TIBBAWO. Camp.
Day 07: TREK TIBBAWO TO NAYREKSTE BAWO. Camp.
Day 08: TREK FROM NAYREKSTE BAWO TO WAMAY BAWO. Camp.
Day 09: TREK FROM WAMAY BAWO TO THE VILLAGE OF ANGLA. Stay in a village
house. It may be that the previous evening we could find accommodation in one
of the other village close by to the Zanskar River, namely the villages of Hanamur
or perhaps Pidmu. We are now well and truly in the Kingdom of Zanskar, where
in times past there used to be two kings. One king lived at Zangla and the other
at Padum.
Day 10: TREK ZANGLA TO TONGDEY, passing through the village of Zozar.
Overnight in a village house. Shortly after leaving Zangla we will see the largest
of the strange bridges made from interwoven twigs that are unusual but common
sight in Zanskar. The gorge also is now left behind and we enter the large plain
leading to Padum. There is a very large and active monastery above the village,
which we will visit.
Day 11: TREK TONGDEY TO PADUM. Five or six hours. Again we could be offered
accommodation in the township itself, though there is a tourist bungalow complex;
however it is likely to be closed for the winter.
Day 12: AT LEISURE IN PADUM.
Day 13-18: RETURN TREK. The return trek is apparently quicker and easier.
Drive to Leh. Overnight in hotel.
Day 19: Sightseeing: Full day sightseeing of Shy, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries.
Overnight hotel at Leh.
Day 20: At Leisure in Leh There is time to buy postcards and do some
souvenir hunting in the narrow back streets or crowded bazaars. Perhaps a visit
to the deserted Royal Place, Ladakh was at one time a powerful Himalayan kingdom
in its own right and Leh, its capital, is a tremendous medieval town. Besides
the Royal Palace the town is a hive of trading activity and crowded with people
in Ladakhi nation dress. Here too are many Tibetan refugees and a taxi ride
to visit their enclave is well worth it.
Day 21: Fly Leh to Delhi. This is one of the most remarkable flights
to be taken in India in that it crosses the Greater Himalayan range. On one
side of the aeroplane can be seen in the distance the peaks of K2, Nanga Parbat
, Gasherbrum and one the other side of the aeroplane, so close that you feel
you could reach out and touch it, is the Nun Kun massif. Upon arriving in Delhi
we transfer to hotel.
Day 22: At Leisure in Delhi. This is a chance to sample heat, dust and
frantic activity of an Indian City. You are free to "Do your own thing"
or if you wish, you trek leader will take you on a tour of India's capital.
It is an intriguing mixture of old bazaars, forts, mosques and mogul tombs,
laced together by the spacious green avenues of Lutyen's imperial city. This
day we intentionally keep as an "spare day" as due to weather conditions
the Leh-Delhi flights do cancel time to time and connecting to the international
flight is on risk. Overnight at hotel.
Day 23: Fly Home.
